About Jonathan

Jonathan van Draak is a Canadian-American fantasy author who grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a BA in English, and now lives in Utah with his wife Hannah and their two mischievous cats.

An autistic nerd who spends much of his time roleplaying and sword fighting, Jonathan has been creating characters and worlds for as long as he can remember. He finally made the obvious choice to become an author in seventh grade (against his mother’s most fervent wishes that he take up a more sensible career, like a lawyer or dentist), and he hasn’t stopped writing since.

Jonathan’s first attempts at writing a novel went about as well as you might suspect a fourteen year-old boy’s attempts to go. His first try did not go beyond the first three pages. The next one after that didn’t make it past seven. His third attempt went a little over eighty pages before he got distracted by another idea (this was a common problem for him at the time). He very nearly finished his first novel during his high school years with a superhero story simply titled “The Event,” though most of his high school writing consisted of fanfics (many of which remain unfinished to this day).

Jonathan finally got his act together in college, where he wrote the first drafts of The Land of Dragons. This was unfortunately also when he reached debilitating levels of chronic pain due to his connective tissue disorder. Thanks to the help of doctors and the support of his wonderful wife, Jonathan is doing much better and can now almost function at the level of your average octogenarian. Now he writes daily as he searches for the right agent to help him share his stories with the world.
